Yiannis (Ioannis) Marinos is a Greek trombonist from Zakynthos who began his musical training at age 8. By 11, he was studying classical trombone in Athens with P. Stefos of the National Symphony Orchestra. At 15, he joined the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra and won the Yamaha Music Foundation competition.
In 1999, he moved to Thessaloniki, where he played in various projects including the salsa band Ahora Asi, the funk group Nasa Funk, and the influential act Yiannis Aggelakas and Episkeptes.
Since 2012, Marinos has been based in the Netherlands, where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Trombone cum laude from Codarts in 2016 with Ilja Reijngoud, Bart van Lier, Bert Boeren and Andy Hunter.
Marinos is a founding member of the jazz fusion band Marutyri, formed in 2014. The group gained international recognition with performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival and tours in Canada, China, Germany, and Belgium. In 2015, they won the Radio 6 Soul & Jazz Talent Award, and in 2016 released their debut LP Inner Movements.
He has performed with groups like ChaChaChalina, MODJI, Knimes Acoustic Group, The Latin Devils and collaborated with acts including Young Gun Silver Fox, The Cubop City Big Band, The ReFreshed Orchestra, Mambisimo Big Band, and Rolf Sanchez.
Since 2017, Marinos has taught jazz trombone at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and since 2019 at ArtEZ Conservatory in Zwolle.
Yiannis offers trombone lessons at his home studio on Weimarstraat in The Hague, welcoming students of all levels—from beginners to advanced players. In addition to trombone instruction, he also teaches jazz theory and arranging, providing a well-rounded approach to music education.
