From Zakynthos to Rotterdam
Trombonist Yiannis Marinos (also written as Ioannis) started studying music at the age of 8 in the local brass band of Zakynthos (Ionian Greek island). Three years later he moved to Athens to study classical trombone at Nakas Conservatory with the teacher P. Stefos, principal trombone player of the National Symphony Orchestra of Athens.In 1995, at the age of 15, he was a member of the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra. The same year he won the Yamaha Music Foundation contest. In 1999 he moved to Thessaloniki, the biggest Greek city in the north. Here he started several new projects: a very successful salsa band in north Greece, a funk band called “Nasa Funk” with who he recorded two albums and played all over Greece and Balcan countries. “Yiannis Aggelakas and Episkeptes” was one of the projects that was one of the most important projects for his professional career.In 2012 he moved to Rotterdam where he studied the trombone at Codarts Concervatory Jazz Department with teachers Ilja Reijngoud,Bart van Lier, Bert Boeren and Andy Hunter. Since then he participated in many bands and big bands in Rotterdam, Utrecht and Den Haag.
Musical experience in the Netherlands
He played with “La Fundación” a salsa big band created from very talented students of the world department of the Concervatory, “La Noticia” another salsa band but with a small set up of 6 people, with “Luminaria”, a mix of folkloric Spanish music with folkloric Greek music and jazz and with “Marutyri”. Marutyri is a jazz fusion band playing own compositions. They performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in July 2015 and in October 2015 they won the prize of Radio 6contest for “Best Soul and Jazz Talent”. In December 2016 they recorded their first LP “Inner Movements”.In June 2016 he graduated “Cum Laude” from Codarts Jazz Department earning the title “Bachelor of Music” specialisation Jazz Trombone”.Yiannis teaches trombone, trompet, piano and mandoline in his home studio in Rotterdam West.
