Hoi! Ik ben Hugrún en ik spel dwarsfluit en trombone. Ik spreek niet zo veel nederlands op het moment maar ik begrijp heel veel dingen. Ik probeer meer te lernen en verbeteren, en dus wil ik graag oefen! Besides this little bit of Dutch, I speak fluent English, Icelandic, Danish and Spanish.

So: hi! My name is Hugrún and I play the flute and the trombone, both wind instruments but practically quite different. I’ve been playing both since I was a kid and have thought children, teenagers and adults how to play - from beginners to more advanced players in different styles such as classical, latin, pop, and general improvisation. If you are interested in flute or trombone (or even both!) then reach out and let’s do a trial lesson! Besides these main two instruments I also play some trumpet and piano, enough to cover the basics so for those wanting to see which instrument to choose I can offer beginners lessons for these four instruments (flute, trombone, trumpet, and piano), as well as general music theory and music lessons for kids where we explore what music is and how it shows up in our daily life. That means anything from clapping, singing, listening to the traffick and looking for a rhythm, exploring the notes on the piano, making up our own songs and listening to music from all kinds of genres. 

Practical info: for the trial lesson I do have a trombone, trumpet, and keyboard available for the students to try but not a flute (yet). The lessons are suitable for age 8 and older and can be from 30 (recommended for beginners) minutes to 90 minutes (for more advanced students).

My biggest inspirations from other instrumentalists are Orlando 'Maraca' Valle, Elena Pinderhughes, Frank Lacy, Tómas R. Einarsson and Laufey. I recommend checking them all out! What I find inspiring from all of them is the expression that they have and the freedom in combination with respect for the traditions of classical, jazz and/or latin music, that they show in their musicality. I myself find so much beauty, joy, and excitement in all of these styles, however different they are.

As a performing musician I mostly play latin music: salsa, charanga, cumbia, son, latin jazz as well as some samba, bossa nova, and more styles of latin fusion with bands such as Las Hienas, La Reunión, AFLOJE, and the Icelatin band. Currently I also tour with the Magic Mumble Jumble, a indie-folk-pop band where I sing backing vocals as well. I recently graduated with a bachelors of latin music performance from Codarts but before that I did years of classical flute studies as well as growing up in a marching band that covered all kinds of genres. So as far as styles go, I’m familiar with a lot and always eager to learn more!

I offer a range of flute lessons, from absoloute beginners to advanced level, for the saxophonist wanting to improve their flute ambouchure or someone that has never tried a wind instrument before. Using my classical background as a basis for technique studies and my degree in latin music to help you find the joy of improvisation, I'm sure we can make a detailed course that suits your wants and needs!
