NL: Mijn naam is Gabriela Martina Heer (Zwitserse). In de zomer van 2021 ben ik naar Amsterdam verhuisd na dertien jaar in Boston en New York te hebben gewoond en gewerkt als professioneel vocalist, componist, arrangeur, docent en talentmanager. Mijn Nederlandse taalniveau is momenteel C1 en ik ben net geslaagd voor het staatsexamen NT2-2. Ik heb twintig jaar internationale ervaring op het podium, achter het podium en achter de schermen van de muziekindustrie in jazz, pop en hedendaagse muziek.

In mijn functies als parttime zangdocente aan het Berklee College of Music en als docent van het Aspire Five-Week Music Performance Intensive Program werkte ik proactief en zelfstandig in een cultureel diverse, universitaire omgeving.  Mijn hele carrière ben ik muzikant, docent en teamleider geweest in de muziek- en onderwijswereld en ik hoop iets van die ervaring te kunnen doorgeven aan jou als mijn toekomstige stemstudent.

EN: My name is Gabriela Martina Heer (Swiss). I moved to Amsterdam in the summer of 2021 after living and working in Boston and New York for thirteen years as a professional vocalist, composer, arranger, teacher and talent manager. My Dutch language level is currently C1 and I just passed the state NT2-2 exam. I have twenty years of international experience on stage, behind the stage and behind the scenes of the music industry in jazz, pop and contemporary music.

In my positions as a part-time vocal teacher at Berklee College of Music and as an instructor of the Aspire Five-Week Music Performance Intensive Program, I worked proactively and independently in a culturally diverse, university environment.  Throughout my career, I have been a musician, teacher and team leader in the music and education world, and I hope to pass on some of that experience to you as my future voice student.

Gabriela Martina is a singer, composer and bandleader who grew up in Switzerland. She lived and worked in the USA (Boston and New York) for 13 years, learning from the people who made jazz (and many other styles of music originating in the USA) the important art form it is today. Martina's album 'Homage to Grämlis' is a tribute to the farm in the Swiss Alps where she grew up. In autumn 2021, Martina had the great honor of receiving the 2020 Art and Culture Prize from the Art and Culture Commission Horw, her hometown in Switzerland. She also received the DIPLÔME DE MÉDAILLE DE VERMEIL of the lauréats Arts-Sciences-Lettres, 2020, in Paris (France).

Her album No White Shoes, released in 2016 and rated four stars by DownBeat, was an important step on the singer's path to becoming a musician of the 21st century. Martina has had the opportunity to perform and collaborate with musicians such as Meshell Ndegeocello, Jack DeJohnette and Angelique Kidjo. She has recorded with veteran drummer J.R. Robinson and was a semi-finalist in the Shure Vocal Competition at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival, where she performed with guitarist Lee Ritenour's band. Martina released a critically acclaimed EP, Curiosity, which included her original song ‘Ain't Nobody’, which was a finalist in the 2012 American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards. Martina had her own booking agency called Red Velvet Sounds in the US for several years and co-founded and curated the free improv concert series In Momentum.

In June 2019, she took part in the Central Switzerland Yodeling Festival and graduated with top marks. She has also performed at concert venues such as the Berklee Performance Center, Jordan Hall, International Tennis Hall of Fame, State House of Flags, and Scullers Jazz Club. Gabriela holds a bachelor's degree from Berklee College of Music and a master's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Donna McElroy, Jason Moran, Cecil McBee, Miguel Zenon, Frank Carlberg, Dominique Eade, Ken Schaphorst and Jerry Bergonzi, among others.
