My name is Flávia, and I come from Portugal. When I was 6 years old I totally fell in love with the flute. Soon after I started learning it in the local wind orchestra. After my first lesson I came to my parents and I immediately told them that I wanted to become a professional musician. And I never looked back! Still today I am super in love with the sound of the instrument, and I want to transmit to you this excitement of how wonderful it is to make music!
After my bachelor in Portugal I moved to Switzerland to do a master degree in orchestral playing. While I was in my last year I got a trial position as principal piccolo and flute in the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and because of that I moved to The Netherlands. Since then I have been playing a lot in different dutch orchestras.
My international background certainly gives me many social skills to communicate in an effective way with people from many different cultures, and in many languages: English, French and Portugese. I can also speak Dutch at a basic level, I did A2. I am very motivated to give lessons in Dutch, so that I can also practice my language skills.
As for my teaching background, I started teaching at a very young age, when I was about 11 or 12. This because of the system where I learned how to play the flute: when you know how to approach the instrument, then it is your turn to teach beginners. So as soon I started in an official music school, I had a lot of new knowledge to share with the older wind orchestra’s flutists, and I started teaching the new ones. I also taught children from 8-18 years old, replacing a pregnant friend in Switzerland. And during my year in Rotterdam Philharmonic I also taught bachelor and master students. So you can be sure that I am comfortable teaching all ages and all levels.
I love playing, and I love teaching. It gives me a lot of joy to see students getting better and conquering their goals!
If you are a beginner, in the first lesson I will try to understand what are the students goals, and what kind of music they would like to play. Having a clear direction will help me making a more efficient planning, to keep the student motivated. If it is his/her first lesson ever, I will teach some fun exercises that will help with playing, and then we will move on producing sound. I do expect all students to practice at home between lessons and to have their own instruments. My recommendation, depending on the case, is for them to have either a flute, a fife or a shining piper. The whole learning process is meant to be fun, so I will do my best to create games and exciting ways to learn the flute. If the student already knows how to play, I expect him/her to prepare something so I can see where we are and how I can best approach the course to take, to make playing better and better!
If the students are advanced, we will work on developing the student’s skills so they can play at a really high level. We can prepare for competitions, auditions and concerts. You can also approach me if there is some stubborn technical challenge that you would like to work on. Here my main goal is to help you be a true musician, touching the heart of the audience. This is not an easy task, but I am sure we will have a lot of fun!
If you want to be a professional flutist you probably know that there is no way around piccolo playing. It is often a hated instrument, but that is just because it is misunderstood. Here you will learn how to effectively practice and all the technical tricks that will teach you to make of the piccolo a true musician’s tool, touching the heart of your audience. It is easier than you might think!
If you are an amateur you can also just learn the piccolo, no need to learn the flute if you don’t want to!
The recorder is the perfect instrument to start learning! It can be cheap, with a great melodic sound, and in no time you will be able to play your favourite tunes. This course is for beginners.
Music Theory (Muziektheorie)
Music theory is crucial if you want to become a really good performer, because it will teach you to read music, and that way you can learn new music much faster. I recommend all my students to learn at least basic solfege skills, so we can work much more effectively. Here you can also learn about harmony and analysis, and how to use it to become a better musician.
