I am Anna, a Hungarian cello and viola da gamba player. I grew up with music all around me – my father is a musician, and me, my brother and my sister started to play an instrument in an early age. When I was 5, my parents took me to the local music school, and showed me the cello. I didn’t know too much about it, but I started to get lessons – and 16 years later I graduated at the Music Academy as a classical cellist. It was a long journey, and no always easy. Playing an instrument requires a lot of discipline, regularity, and time to practice. I didn’t always ha that, but I always had the love for music and to play music with others. Playing chamber music was important in my family when I was a kid, and it is still the most important part of my professional life. When I teach, I try to bring chamber music into the lessons as well: we can play together from the beginning. It helps for the musicality, the intonation, and it is way more fun than playing alone.
I also play viola da gamba: when I was around 20, I fell in love with this instrument, and I specialized in early music in the Netherlands. Today I share my life equally between cello and viola da gamba, playing in small ensembles, orchestras, or solo concerts.
I play cello since I was 5, and I hold a Bachelor diploma in classical cello. I have been teaching privately in the past 10 year, both children and adults. At the university in Hungary and in The Hague, I completed several courses in education: methodology, pedagogy and psychology. In addition, I studied special education in Hungary, which gave me deeper knowledge in pedagogy. In my lessons, my most important goal is that you enjoy music. I take care to give you good technical basis, but I like to work on pieces from the beginning rather than technical exercises – so we can play music and have fun. I also include a little bit of theory in the lessons – it is important to know how to read the score, be aware of the musical terms, and have a little bit of ear training. In the first lesson we will have a discussion about your expectations, goals – it is important for me to know what motivates you, how much time do you have to practice, what your goal is with the instrument. If you don’t have a cello yet, don’t worry – I can help you find one. You can also come to the trial lesson without an instrument, and use one of my cellos. I am happy to work with students in any level – beginners, advanced or professionals who would like to know more about baroque cello and baroque performance practice.
Viola da gamba lessons
Baroque music was always present in my life through my father, who made me play the continuo for his sonatas since I was 10. But I only met the gamba ten years later, and I immediately felt that I have to study more and learn how to play on that instrument. So I came to the Netherlands, and I completed a bachelor and a master diploma at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Mieneke van der Velden and Philippe Pierlot. I work as a professional gamba player in different ensembles, and I give solo concerts as well. I am always very happy to have students who would like to learn this instrument. In the lessons we play a lot of music, talk about technique and historical performance practice as well. I play on all sizes of the viola da gamba: treble, tenor and bass. I am also very happy to give group lessons: if you have friends who you play consort music with, I can join and give you coaching. I also include a little bit of theory in the lessons – it is important to know how to read the score, be aware of the musical terms, and have a little bit of ear training. In the first lesson, we will have a discussion about your expectations, goals – it is important for me to know what motivates you, how much time do you have to practice, what your goal is with the instrument. If you don’t have a viol yet, don’t worry – I can help you find one. I am happy to work with students in any level and in any age.
